Senator Ragan says mental health improvements need funding

Senator Amanda Ragan
The following is a legislative update/column from Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason City:

Tragedies have become all too common when Iowans can’t get the mental health care they need. Unfortunately, Iowa has a severe shortage of mental health treatment professionals—especially in our rural communities.

The right treatment at the right time is critical for those struggling with severe, complex mental health or substance abuse. That’s why I supported the legislation to provide the services they need. Access centers will offer short-term care for those in crisis; treatment teams will provide individualized, in-home help; more transportation options will be available for patients; and mental health professionals and law enforcement will work more closely together to prevent tragedies.

Ensuring Iowa children get necessary help early on gives them a better chance of leading happy, healthy, productive lives, while untreated mental illness can set them up for lifelong struggles at home, school and work. They may end up homeless or in jail.
A new Children’s System State Board is working out how we can implement and pay for a well-coordinated system that will improve the well-being of kids and families. Troyce Fisher of Clear Lake has been appointed to the Board, so I trust North Iowa’s needs will be well represented. The Board will develop a strategic plan that the Legislature can work from during the 2019 session.

In addition, educators and school personnel will get training to recognize depression in students and identify adverse childhood experiences—such as enduring abuse, witnessing domestic violence or substance abuse in the home—so that their impact can be minimized.
Iowans say improving access to mental health care is one of the most important things we can do for the quality of life in our state. The steps we’ve taken can make a difference, but we must re-assess the state budget so that funding reflects Iowans’ priorities.

Ever notice that these elected officials are more and more not being associated with their party – I suppose the new ballots or screens might not say what party they represent – ? – Save America vote RED – Blue is the new communist/socialist color.

She needs all the mental health help she can get!
