Virginia Anderegg, 92, of Charles City, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on the first day of the New Year, 2020.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Gary Mayer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service at the church in the social hall on Monday. Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home will be assisting the family.
(Mary) Virginia Ann was born April 26, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Vincenzo James and Mary Virginia (Walsh) Rubino. Virginia attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School. On August 24, 1946, Virginia married Darvin E. Anderegg at Our Lady of Perpetual Health Basilica in Brooklyn, New York. Her life was transformed from that of the big city to rural life on an Iowa farm. Virginia met Darvin when, in 1944, her brother Ed brought home his Navy buddies for the Christmas holidays. Thus began Virginia’s new life of challenge and adventure. She later recorded her experiences by authoring a book of short stories entitled, “Adventures of a Brooklyn Girl Down on the Farm”. Though she loved her life in Iowa, she never lost her Brooklyn accent to the delight of her family and friends. When they left the farm, Virginia worked several jobs including jobs at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. She began as a Nurse’s Aide and later as an Insurance Filing Clerk, retiring after 17 years.
Virginia and Darvin loved to travel and visited many interesting places often accompanied by her brother Ed and his wife. One noteworthy trip was to Taiwan where they were feted by the Taiwanese government in appreciation of Darvin and Ed’s service when in the U.S. Navy. Virginia loved to read and was an avid movie buff. She loved to cook. Her family always looked forward to her specialty meal of Italian spaghetti with meatballs, braciole and homemade ravioli. Virginia and Darvin loved to go camping, often filling the camper with as many grandkids as possible. Her happiest times were those spent with her greatest treasure, her family.
Virginia never met a stranger. She adopted Will Rogers’ philosophy, “A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet.” She had an unlimited optimism and the ability to always see the silver lining. Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned people will forget what you say, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Virginia made people laugh, she made them feel happy.
Living family members include her four children: Patricia (Tom) Nockels of Windsor Heights, Charlotte (Dave) Nehls, Eugene (Keri) Anderegg and David (Patrese) Anderegg all of Charles City; 13 grandchildren: Kristin (Bob) Gleason, Ehren Nockels, Jeff Nehls, Tricia (Scott) Pajer, Joe (Shaina) Anderegg, Amy (Cory) Spieker, Casey Anderegg, Tyler Anderegg, Cory (Shelley) Anderegg, Samm Anderegg, Alysse Anderegg, Max Anderegg and Simon Anderegg; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Peter of Sheffield; and two brothers-in-law: Bob Butler of Olathe, Kansas and Charles Marzen of Nora Springs.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years; her parents; brother, Ed Rubino; great-grandson, Jordan Nehls; and great-great grandson, Noah Conroy.
