Women’s College Basketball: Cyclones pick up exhibition win over Missouri Western

AMES – Iowa State rolled to an 87-54 victory in an exhibition matchup with Missouri Western State on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum behind double-digit efforts by five Cyclones.

Ashley Joens led all scorers with 19, ending her night one rebound shy of a double-double. Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw had a big second half effort to post 15 points in her first taste of action at Hilton Coliseum, while Jade Thurmon (16), Ines Nezerwa (14) and Madison Wise (13) were also in double figures.

The Cyclones jumped out to an early 12-3 advantage, holding the lead for the duration of the contest save for a brief 3-2 edge for the Griffons. Iowa State was locked in defensively in the opening stanza, holding the Griffons to a 26.7 clip from the field while forcing 13 turnovers. After shooting 57.1 percent in the first half, the Cyclones took a 42-20 lead into the locker room. The Cyclones got to the charity stripe 21 times in the first frame, with Joens leading the charge going a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.

Freshman Espenmiller-McGraw led the Cyclones’ second-half effort, putting up nine points in the third quarter. Nezerwa also had a solid second frame, scoring 12 on 4-for-4 shooting. Iowa State continued to earn trips to free-throw line in the second half, adding 13 more attempts to go 26-for-34 in the game. The Cyclones wrapped up the game going 9-for-10 from the field in the final quarter to cap off an 87-54 win.

Iowa State officially opens the 2019-20 season at Hilton Coliseum against Southern on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised by Cyclones.tv.
