Iowa’s Solid Waste Alternatives Program faces funding shortfall

trash-bagsDES MOINES – A state program the tries to decrease the dependence on landfills and promotes recycling has been put on hold due to funding issues.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says that due to continued increasing interest and participation in the DNR’s Solid Waste Alternatives Program (SWAP), coupled with decreased available funding, the DNR will not currently accept new funding proposal requests.

The DNR will continue to evaluate available resources, and may consider accepting proposals for projects again in summer 2017. This does not affect projects currently receiving funding.

SWAP works to reduce Iowans’ reliance on landfills for solid waste management by providing funding assistance for projects in waste reduction, recycling, public education and composting.
