Branstad appointees to Board of Medicine blocked by liberals

Janet Petersen, State Senator

DES MOINES – Liberals in the Iowa Senate blocked the re-appointment of two picks by Governor Terry Branstad to the Iowa Board of Medicine this week.

“This is the Board of Medicine,” Democratic Senator Janet Petersen said during debate on the matter. “This is not Terry Branstad and Kim Reynolds’s board that they politically stack with people who won’t back a woman’s constitutional right for a legal medical procedure.”

The rub was that the two Branstad picks, board chair Diane Clark of Lake Mills and Dr. Hamed Tewfik of Iowa City, in 2013 had opposed a procedure in which a webcam is used remotely to give women baby-killing pills, thus causing an abortion.

The appointees needed two-thirds of Senators to approve their appointment, and both fell short.

Petersen, an abortion supporter, said she “was proud to stand up for Iowa women and Iowa families tonight in the Iowa Senate. I was the Democratic floor leader for both nominations. Senator Randy Feenstra of Sioux County handled one of the nominations for the Republicans.”

State Senator Tony Bisognano, a Polk county Democrat, chimed in, saying “I helped Senate Democrats block the reappointment of two Branstad/Reynolds appointees to the Board of Health. Both had helped shutdown a successful tele-medicine program for political reasons.”

Not all liberals believe that abortion should be used a method of birth control. Most believe that if abortion is necessary, then the woman should make that decision not 100 (mostly guys) people in Washington, DC. I would be fine with no abortion but it isn’t my decision. I would also be fine without any income tax but it is not my decision.

I agree with you on that. Except you just can not trust some women to not use it for birth control. I also agree that no one has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body, but if she is pregnant there is someone else involved that can’t yet speak for themselves. There are many other forms of birth control available that can be used other than abortion. If it is a case of saving the mothers life then it is a different issue.

Once they have a heartbeat, they are a baby, period. If a woman cares about their “health, they can take preventive measures to not have children, and make sure their mate does as well.” Killing babies is what it is, murder.

Religious doctrine has no place in the laws of our land.

Where does this say anything at all about religion? It is about murder, which is a civil law matter.

To be considered murder, one must achieve personhood. When that happens is a matter of your faith. Leave your cruddy religion out of my life and our laws.

It is not a matter of religion, it is a matter of law and decency.

Wrong. It’s because you’re down with JC and you want to force your religious doctrine onto everyone. In my mind, no one achieves personhood until the baby’s head (or feet) breaks the plane of the bergina.

You are wrong. I am not religious at all, but still do not agree with killing baby’s.

Well. you think I’m wrong. And I know you’re wrong. Where does that leave us? I think it means government should get out of the business of making silly laws based on religious beliefs and leave it up to each individual to decide whether they want to abort their fetus.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this issue.

RIght? “Peterson, an abortion supporter,…” No one is an “abortion supporter.” Some people simply believe it’s a woman’s right to control her own body and that flushing a cluster of cells is not murder.

Right. Some people believe that when Mom kills her baby it is not murder. These people are called abortion supporters. What part of that is hard to understand?
