Iowa inmate dead after fight

FORT MADISON – A man incarcerated at the Iowa State Penitentiary faced off with another inmate and died as a result of the altercation.

Michael Whitworth, an Offender assigned to the Iowa State Penitentiary died Monday, October 30th, 2016 while at the University of Iowa Hospitals.

Offender Whitworth was hospitalized due to an incident that occurred at Iowa State Penitentiary on October 20th 2016. Whitworth was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals after the incident.

The incident involved an altercation between Offender Whitworth and Offender Lha Southideth-Whiten. The incident remains under investigation and has been referred to the Lee County Attorney’s office for prosecution. There were no staff injuries.

Southideth-Whiten is 35 years old and serving a 45 year sentence for out of Polk County for Robbery 1st Degree, Firearm Possession and two counts of Proh Acts Mfg – Drugs.

Whitworth was 46 years old and was serving a Life sentence from Marion County for Kidnapping1st Degree. This sentence began on October 12th 2005.
