MASON CITY – Swaledale Mayor John Drury confirmed today that his quest for a seat on the Cerro Gordo Board of Supervisors is not over, despite coming up short at a Special Nominating Convention where the Democratic candidate for the November ballot was chosen.
“I’m running as an independent,” Mr. Drury told NIT Thursday. “I will issue a formal press release on Monday.”
Sources also told NIT that fellow candidate Adam Wedmore of Rockwell – who also came up short with the delegates despite getting the most votes in the primary election – has announced he is leaving the Democratic party, due to dis-satisfaction with the convention.
The man picked by the delegates, however, told NIT that he wanted to thank them for their support.
“I want to thank all 13 of the delegates again,” said Democratic nominee Doug Nelson of Clear Lake. “I don’t agree with the idea that doing the duty of your position is something that was a failing. You are dedicated people who voted for who you believed in. Each of the candidates asked you to vote for the person you felt was the most likely to win this fall and you did as they asked.”
As for his opponents from within the Democratic party, Mr. Nelson said “I’m disappointed but not surprised by these developments. Neither were active in party activities before they announced this winter. While there are some who feel the delegates failed the system, the actions of these candidates show that the delegates understood the real intent of the candidates and voted for the person they felt was the best leader. Electability based on holding office is a misdirection because there’s a catch-22 involved. If you have to be previously elected to hold office, nobody new could ever hold office. But let’s look at what is best for the county and that is that the people continue to have a voice. I welcome independents; more candidates make better candidates and more choices. I hope everyone will support the candidate that they believe will make the best leader for all of the citizens of the county, regardless of party.”
Nelson will face Republican Casey Callanan, also of Clear Lake, on the November ballot.

Had a couple more thoughts.. If you want to be a good supervisor, you need to have the time. You need to put in at least 30 hrs a week and then attend the evening mtgs. that are required. Casey Callanan should be working at least 50 hrs a week in his insurance business, since he is still very young and should be building his business. So, that makes 80 plus per week. So, with that, what job do u think will suffer??? I am on the County Compensation Board– he needs to work hard 4 the pay!
I really believe in John Drury’s abilities, but, now the pool is even more diluted with the new changes. I don’t care who runs as a democrat at this point. I don’t see anyone beating Casey Callanan…The only one that I see with prayer would be John Drury.
I talked to Casey and I still cannot figure out why he is running. He is a successful business person who should be working at least 50 hours a week to continue to build his business. I am not saying he is not qualified.. but why???

From what I have seen LVS is N.I.T.’s full time bully. He very rarely has anything to add to the conversation. He just likes to bash people, call people names and threaten people. He’s running so there will be a clean sweep up regarding clear lake special interest politics. There’s a tight knit group in power at cl city hall and having one of their own as supervisor will insure rubber stamp on any projects that extend past clear lake borders. It’s about power and policy. Why is that hard for you to understand? People Ned to defeat Callanan out of the interest of proper checks and balances alone.

This is all just playing into the Republican’s hands. We just nominated the weakest of 4 candidates, a 3-time loser that finished dead last in our primary. Now the guy who got next to last runs, this wili split our Democratic vote even worse yet. I bet Casey Callanan and Gary Blodgett are already celebrating. @Hillary-that is pretty harsh. At least he got off his butt and did something. I don’t necessarily agree with Doug’s politics, but I do respect him running.
What are Doug’s policies? I’m still waiting to learn them. Being that he’s a farmer, I’d hope he’d listen to my agrarian transitioning ideas.
