Strong storm rips through Iowa Monday, causing damage and power outages

HAMILTON COUNTY – A strong storm ripped through Iowa Monday, causing damage and power outages statewide.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday afternoon that Iinterstate 35 is closed southbound from Hwy 20 to Exit 133 at Ellsworth. The closure was expected to last for several hours after a storm that passed through blew over two southbound semis and backed up traffic for several miles causing at least one other accident. All drivers escaped with very minor injuries, but there was serious damage to vehicles (as pictured, above).

A strong storm blew threw Central and Northern Iowa and made its way through Eastern Iowa. Winds as strong as 80 miles per hour blew over trees and sent debris flying through metro areas.

Allinat Energy reports a severe weather moving through Iowa had caused significant damage and widespread power outages. Power lines were down and, before restoration can begin, there will be many trees to clear. As soon as it’s safe to do so, Alliant Energy claimed crews would be begin working to assess the situation and working to restore services. As of right now, the company is unable to provide an estimate time of full restoration.

It was also reported by law enforcement in Iowa that cellular phone provider towers may have been damaged and causing issues for cellular phone calls.
