Steckman announces intention to run for re-election

Mason City, Iowa — State Representative Sharon Steckman of Mason City Thursday night announced that she will seek re-election to the Iowa House in the new House District 53, which includes all of  Mason and up and down Highway 65 to the Cerro Gordo county line.

“Over the last three years, I have been privileged to listen to and serve the people of Mason City at the State Capitol.  After ending last year with $1 billion in surplus and reserves, I’m proud of the work we’ve done. However, there is more we must do to strengthen middle class families,” said Steckman.

“If we are going to compete for good-paying jobs, Iowa must have a highly-skilled workforce, great quality of life, and a world class educational system from preschool to college.  As newly appointed Ranking Member of the House Education Committee I am anxious to be an important voice for my constituents in the education reforms for next session. Those reforms will be an important step towards creating that highly-skilled workforce,” added Steckman.

Steckman is currently serving her 2nd term in the Iowa House and, as Ranking Member of the House Education Committee, will help craft education reform plans next session.  She also serves on the Education Appropriations, Environmental Protection, Human Resources, Natural Resources, and Economic Growth Committees.  She serves on the Tax Credit Interim Committee, on the MHEC (Midwest Higher Education Compact) Council, and the local RSVP Board.  Steckman spent 30 years in the classroom and retired from the Mason City Community School District.
