MASON CITY – A Mason City resident contacted the police department to report that they received a scam phone call from a person that tried to convince him that his grandson had been injured in a car accident and had been arrested. The scammer tried to talk the resident into sending money to bail his grandson out of jail. Fortunately the resident did not believe the caller and did not send any money.
The phone number the call came from was area code 661, prefix 991. This number originates from the Bakersfield, California area. The entire phone number has been reported to have been used in similar scams.
This happened to my Grandma a few months ago… They knew people’s names and everything. Scared her pretty bad but thankful she called me first cause she said they were very convincing..
