Report: Slavery alive and well to tune of 35.8 million worldwide

slaveNIT – A report released this week shows that slavery is widespread in today’s world, and not a relic of the past as some may think.

The report from Australia-based Walk Free estimates that there about 35.8 million slaves in the world today, with about 60,000 in the United States. The report defines modern slavery as “a hidden crime.

“It takes many forms, and is known by many names: slavery, forced labour, or human trafficking. All forms involve one person depriving another person of their freedom: their freedom to leave one job for another, their freedom to leave one workplace for another, their freedom to control their own body. Modern slavery involves one person possessing or controlling a person in such as a way as to significantly deprive that person of their individual liberty, with the intention of exploiting that person through their use, management, profit, transfer or disposal.”

The West African nation of Mauritania ranks number one in the Index. In 2014, an estimated four percent of the population – approximately 155,600 people – are enslaved in Mauritania, a country with deeply entrenched hereditary slavery.

India was the top offender with 14 million slaves. China was next with 3.2 million, followed by Pakistan (2.1 million), Uzbekistan (1.2 million), Russia (1 million) and Nigeria (830,000).

Isn’t our government doing that to some of us… the working, tax paying, voting, American citizens.

And here I thought it was just us who was at fault. Even though we have abolished slavery here there are some idiots that think we should still be punished for the sins of the past. Look at what the rest of the world is doing.
