Pork plant protestors plague Prestage at city hall platform (photos)

MASON CITY – A couple of dozen pork plant protestors made their way to city Hall in Mason City Monday morning.

As the Mason City council considers the final reading on May 3 for a proposed development agreement with Prestage Foods to build a sprawling pork processing plant on the city’s south side, protestors staged a small rally outside the main doors to city hall Monday morning. The priest began around 8 AM and was wrapping up by 10 AM.

Some of the protesters could be heard yelling “SLOW DOWN” to people driving by.  The urged people to “Call your city council” and urge them to “vote no” on the pork plant or at least to slow down the process of confirming the economic incentive deal with Prestage Foods.

One of the most vocal and animated persons against the plant, Tom Willett of rural Clear Lake, brought his dogs to the protest. These are apparently the same dogs he speaks of when he raises fears of “flies eating the ears off your dogs” if the pork plant is built. He has spoken over and over about the supposed “CAFOs” (confined animal feeding operations) that will follow the hog plant once it’s in operation and the impact on his dogs at his rural homestead.

Phyllis Willis of Fertile also was on the scene.  She raises free-range hogs and is very much against the “corporate” hog processing industry.

This city council will consider on May 3 the final vote for a multi-million dollar economic incentive package for Prestage Foods to build a plant in southern Mason City worth over $200 million.  Prestige would be the largest taxpayer in the city – even with the 10 years of tax breaks the city os offering.  However, city taxpayers are on the hook for tens-of-millions of dollars in infrastructure improvements so the plant can operate at full capacity, eventually, which would be 20,000 pigs slaughtered 6 days a week.

20,000 hogs per day – that would be a line of pigs walking end to end from downtown mason city to the Surf ballroom and another 10,000 in the general area of the kill plant. In other words they would stretch end to end all away around the lake for another example. What a 4th of July parade for prestige –

Mass Institutional Death (MID). As i was saying…humans should at least have to kill their every third meal if they want to continue eating meat. What’s with this pussy proxy shit? Some toothless drunk zapping hogs so little kiddies on Briarstone can eat their morning links. Screw that. You want meat sweethearts? Kill it yourself.

“What is efficiency/economy of scale?”

Good thing you’re not taking any Economics classes @ niacc

Nah, no way O’Lagios, my drunken Irish cousin. Don’t give me that ergonomic argument. Nazis got pretty damn efficient at leading Jews to the chambers. It ain’t about efficiency, or production. It’s about life, and how human beings treat and relate to other species. Factories of death set a bad precedent. Not looking an animal in the eye before you take its life is coward yellow.

Good thing you told us what defines a lazy coward. We might have never figured that out just from reading everything else you post

No one cares.

Nice Blue zone addition!

Really I agree with you -Iowa is a place for a hog slaughter house with all the commercial hog farms around this area – Only we believe the consiquenses greatly out number the benefits – mostly the destruction of our quality way of life and the enviroment

What is the particular “quality” in “our way of life”?

We live in Iowa and agriculture related industries will be the only option for future growth and development. Fortune 500 companies ain’t gonna happen here, not now, not ever. But we can and should negotiate with Prestage and hold them accountable and financially responsible for helping us to assimilate the cultural diversity that will carpet bomb our community, the environmental consequences, infrastructure and the list goes on. After all we are holding all the cards. Lets lick our wounds, stop playing the victim and make the best of this. Alex Kuehn is on to something!

I am holding out for IBM & Apple. I am sure they have heard of Mason City Iowa and we are on their radar
SAVE YOUR BREATH FOLKS, IT IS A DONE DEAL
You now have 2 choices, live with it or leave

Yes no doubt, Sperry/Unisys was the best employer ever in the area but those days are over.. And yes we are going to choose to leave it not live with it..
Welcome to Iowa oink as your enter

Folks have been leaving this county for decades, long before this corporation was even in existence.

We got our bike lanes, our downtown bistros, a sorta starbucks, and they still don’t give us a chance.

Poop

Donald Trump says if 60% of this pork is going to chinaland let them polute their own country with its own pork plant – don’t let china make america their slaves.
