Op-ed: Corridor group is “all hat and no cattle” by Peter Children

The formation of the “North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation,” was triumphed in today’s Globe Gazette.  Sounds impressive, but like a lot of things our own development director says; it’s all cattle and no hat.  Smoke but no fire.  Did they announce a new business that might be coming in? I missed that part.  I wonder if they were all wearing those red scarfs that set them apart in Washington, D.C.

These people have all agreed to agree, well that’s a load off my mind, now we can all rest easy.  This is a lot like those siding contracts where much is said but little is done.

From what I get out of this news breaking story is this; If I have a business located in this Golden Corridor, and I want to move it, I have to get permission.  Who gave these people sudden control over my business? I think the way it is suppose to work is that these people with fancy office’s and big paychecks from the public are suppose to bring business into the area, not screw with the ones that are already here.  Why don’t they post a list of the new businesses Brent Willett has brought in here? It wouldn’t take up much space, it could be written on that slip of paper that comes inside a Chinese fortune cookie.

If they want to show some effort, some executive expertise, why doesn’t this high powered group settle the conflict on the plaza in downtown Mason City?  Last evenings television news report offered a small insight into this problem but did not tell the whole story.  There is a conflict between the Historic Park Inn Hotel and the rest of the merchants on the plaza over parking.  How asinine can you get? This city spent millions on a new street scape to attract traffic into the downtown area and now the bully on the corner want to show the rest of the kids on this high priced playground just where the bear shit in the woods.  How utterly petty can you get?  They control the alley, and bet your ass you are not going to park back there. It doesn’t matter that the hotel occupancy level allows the manager to take the sheets home to launder them, this is about control, and believe me there is nothing more dangerous than organized ignorance.

Two stores have closed their doors because of this; and at the same time the “A” team is announcing further control over any sudden moves by existing businesses in any specified area’s they deem pertinent that might be located in any “Golden” area.   I told you once not that long ago that we’re all living inside a cartoon, now do you believe me?

I came up with an idea about what to do with the old movie theaters in Southbridge Mall. It’s not for everyone but, it is someting that might get limited use…10yrs give or take…

damn code errors!

I got a great idea what to do with the old movie theater in Southbridge Mall. It certainly won’t do much for the entire population of Mason City, but it’s something!

Charles City, Osage, New Hampton seem to have great growth!!

Does the Hotel actually own the parking space or does the city?

Very good question. I hope some can answer that

Hotel

Did the city deed the land to them?

City owns it and it is part of the alley.

I hear on the scanner all the time go back to the hotel on compliant that someone is parked in their parking lot. Come on it’s noon lunch time hotel is empty (surprise) all the parking spots are free but can’t park their. They want business downtown not enough parking around the plaza. I’m glad we spend are taxing dollars watching out for parking violators.

…and the pot calls the kettle black.
