Lyle was born April 7, 1934, in Mason City to Lyle K. Murl and Dorothy Proscovec Murl.
He met his future wife, Dixie Johnson, while she was walking to school. The two later married on June 16, 1953, at Holy Family Catholic Church and went on to share 60 years of marriage before Dixie passed away in 2013.
Hard work was a constant throughout Lyle’s life.
He joined Carnation Dairy in Mason City and spent years delivering dairy products to grocery stores throughout northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. Early in his career, Lyle was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before serving more than two years in Germany.
After completing his military service, he returned to Mason City, resumed his work with Carnation Dairy and continued building a life with his growing family.
Following his retirement from Carnation Dairy, Lyle took on a new chapter with the Iowa Lottery, working as a district sales representative. He greatly enjoyed the position and proved successful in the role.
Away from work, Lyle loved pheasant hunting, duck hunting, golfing and fishing. Some of his happiest times were spent with Dixie at their cabin in northern Minnesota, where they enjoyed fishing, a quieter pace of life and the many friendships they built there.

His family includes six children, Katherine (Barry) Johnson of Rockford, Marilyn (Jay) Richey of Mason City, Susan (Mark) VanHorn of Mason City, Michael (Mary) Murl of Rochester, Minnesota, Marcia Stromley and friend Dan Tuttle of Mason City, and James Murl of Sheffield.
