MASON CITY – Saturday afternoon, Tara and Travis Brick were on North Federal Avenue in downtown Mason City enjoying the sunshine on their unicycles. Despite the fact that the North Iowa landscape was blanketed with snow, they were out doing a spring activity.
“I got my unicycle for Christmas,” said Travis, Tara’s son. “I practiced on the furniture in the house.”
“He mastered it. It’s unreal how fast he was able to learn,” said Tara. “He has good balance for it.”
Tara informed that the wider tire, like the one Travis has, provides a better cushion, the rider don’t feel the bumps as much. “It’s better on tougher terrain and snowbanks.”
When asked how he liked riding the unicycle, Travis answered, “I like it. My goal is to be able to ride around Clear Lake by July. It’s a fifteen mile ride.”
Mom, Tara, was having a little bit more trouble staying balanced. “I used to do this back when I was his age, twenty to thirty years ago and here I am back with my training poles,” she said in a little embarrassed voice. “My husband don’t believe I can do it, this will be proof.”
They were both looking good, riding well and having fun.
