MASON CITY – There will soon be even more beer in downtown Mason City, starting this fall.

Fat Hill Brewing, a 7-barrel craft brewery, will open in downtown Mason City this November. Its brewing facility and taproom in the long-vacant historic building at 17 N. Federal Avenue will feature sixteen taps, space for around ninety patrons, and a variety of live music and special events.

“We researched several cities for our brewery, but Mason City is home and where we want to be,” said Jake Rajewsky, Fat Hill Brewing co-owner and brewer.

“With the River City Renaissance Project improvements coming, there’s no place we’d rather start our business than downtown Mason City.”

The brewery will create approximately six part-time jobs and one full-time job, with the possibility of adding more staff later as demand for distribution increases. Co-owner Molly Angstman will serve as marketing and special events coordinator.

Fat Hill Brewing got its name after the owners realized Cerro Gordo [county] translated into English had a nice ring to it. “We wanted a name that would have a special meaning to locals but also be appealing to visitors,” Angstman said. “I think we found the perfect one.”

There are plans for taproom sales of pints, flights, and growlers, as well as keg sales to local bars and restaurants. Rajewsky has experience brewing a wide variety of ales and will continue to create new recipes as well as brewing traditional styles of ales and lagers.

Between now and November, Fat Hill Brewing will be waiting for completion of state and federal brewing applications, custom equipment orders, and construction on the building. The public is encouraged to follow along with the brewery progress through the brewery Facebook page.

Rajewsky has two-and-a-half years of experience as head brewer at Mason City Brewing and continues his brewing education through the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, Brewers Association, and Cicerone Certification Program. Molly Angstman has a master’s degree in Communications and Public Relations and six years experience in the newspaper industry, as well as a Cicerone Beer Server certification and two-and-a-half years experience as a beer server.
