ST. PAUL — The first fatal motorcycle crash of 2016 happened March 7 in Fridley, Minnesota, making this the second earliest motorcycle fatality ever in Minnesota. The rider and passenger were both killed when the motorcycle went through a red light and hit a minivan, according to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
As motorcyclists take advantage of the early spring weather, public safety officials are urging riders to be aware of spring hazards and drivers to safely share the road.
Last year, the first motorcycle fatality of the season happened March 15. In 2014, the first rider was killed on Minnesota roads on March 11. The earliest motorcycle death happened Feb. 23, 2002. According to preliminary reports, there were 61 motorcycle fatalities in 2015, up from 44 fatalities in 2014.
“It’s the time of year when motorcyclists and motorists need to be extra cautious out on the roads,” said Bill Shaffer of the Department of Public Safety Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center (DPS-MMSC). “Riders haven’t been out on the road for a few months, so it’s a good idea for them to take some time to brush up on their skills. Motorists also need to remember to look twice for motorcycles.”
As the warm weather continues, DPS-MMSC offers these reminders:
- Motorists are advised to watch carefully for motorcycles in traffic and always look twice before turning or changing lanes.
- Riders are advised to wear full, brightly-colored protective gear, including a DOT-approved helmet.
- Riders should travel at safe speeds, pay attention, maintain a minimum two-second following distance and ride sober.
- Riders are encouraged to take a training class, regardless of their experience.
Turns out they won’t make a minivan (that has the right of way) get out of your way when you run a red light. Be careful out there people.

As a relative of his (sad to say), I can attest to the fact that Peter Lagios is one sick bastard.
He is as useless as a white crayon, and a complete waste of skin.
You know how some families have their “black sheep”, well he is ours.

Thanks for letting us know. But we already kinda had an idea. Anybody that would celebrate the death of people that died in a motorcycle accident is surely sick. Peter has no idea if they had loud pipes or not, which would still not be okay to celebrated regardless. He talks of Karma, now let Karma find him for even stating such a crude statement. Remember, he likes drama as you in his family know, so this again is nothing more than attention seeking behavior. A very dangerous man he is, no telling what he will do when he flips out. I feel sorry for you that are his family and have to put up with him. I can only imagine.
For the millions of people and wildlife who are ceaselessly and incessantly blasted with loud, intermittent, startling, explosive tailpipe noise…dead motorcyclists are a good thing. Whatever makes the noise go away. That’s not bad karma, that’s much needed relief.
As the Jews found out, karma simply means “cause and effect”. For the Jews it was “good” karma for Americans to defeat the German Army, resulting in humdreds of thousands of German deaths. For the Nazis it was “good” karma to round up and exterminate the Jews. It’s all from the perspective of the beholder. It would be good karma if Matt would allow free and open debate. But you would consider that bad karma because I’d topple you in intellectual arguing ability. It would be good karma if Clear Lake would hire me as a noise abatement official.
And under your simplified definition of karma, one could say the motorcyclist who carelessly sped they the intersection met his karma when he smashed into the van.
