MASON CITY – Yesterday, NIT reported that a troubling Craigslist ad had been placed that threatened the lives of two cats that would be shot if no one claimed them before the owners in rural Mason City moved from their home.
Thanks to the diligence and caring of a number of individuals, including an animal welfare agency, the two male cats – Buddy and Tommy – have been rescued.
The Craigslist ad stated “I have two friendly cats that must go. We are moving and if they aren’t gone by that time i can assure you that they will be shot after departure.”
NIT received a number of tips about the ad, and informed the Mason City Human Society, who told NIT “We got a call about this ad on Craig’s List too this morning. [Law enforcement] e-mailed the poster [of the ad] and asked her to call us. We don’t have room to take in any cats right now, but we can provide her some resources and alternatives to murdering her pets.”
After NIT published the story, a number of concerned individuals got involved and called the owners of the two male cats. Brenda Ruehlow of Patriots for Pets went and picked up the cats and took them to the shelter in Clear Lake.
Brenda told NIT that “it was not the pet owner who planned on shooting them it was the new home owner.”
The cats are 5-month-old Tommy and one-year-old Buddy.
“We will have vet check them out this week … both are very friendly,” Brenda said.
The kennel only has four cat kennels but this winter do to the number of cats needing to be saved they built a large cat play yard in their small dog room taking up half of space they used!! So its hard to ask them for more of their space!! So please know that we help everything that we have room for with out pushing them out of their own building! !! We cant thank them enough for what they have done to help us !!
Yes we went and got them !! The farm thing didn’t work out! At the point of these poor babies being shot you do whatever it takes to make sure that something so unfair isn’t done !! Even if it means making cats share space !! I wish that we had our own building up and ready to go but we don’t .So The Animal house has opened their doors and share half of their kennels with the shelter . So we can save as many animals as we can!! Our new place will have more places for cats then we have now !

“Our phone and messages are blowing up over the idiot who posted that he would be shooting his two cats if someone didn’t take them (Craigslist – Mason City). We do not have the space available to take on two adult cats. However, I just spoke with the person who posted the cats and they have found a farm home for both of them and apparently they are getting picked up…
