CERRO GORDO COUNTY – Appliances such as a refrigerator, a water softener, and a stove have all been added to the Camp Tanglefoot property with the help of grants received from the Cerro Gordo County Community Foundation (CGCCF). On a recent tour of the facility, Camp Director Julia Cira explained how funding received in 2010, 2012, and 2013 helped to purchase these much needed items.
“The camp has been in existence since 1950 and is used year round by families, organizations, churches, and of course the Girl Scouts,” said Cira. “Appliances eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Without these grants from the CGCCF, it would be hard to replace these items.”
The camp is used year-round, but many of the outdoor activities are emphasized in the summer. Over 740 Iowa Girl Scouts will attend weeklong or day long camp this summer. Such programs as sailing, archery, crafts, a high rope course, and survival 101 are being offered. Girl scouting teaches not only physical skills, but social skills as well, such as confidence, self-reliance, and the ability to problem solve.
During a recent tour of the camp, counselors had gathered for a two week training period. The dock system was being put in, colorful flowers were being planted next to the boat house, and bunk houses were being readied for the arrival of the first campers during the week of June 16. Camp Tanglefoot offers a beautiful setting of woods and prairie to learn, relax, and spend time with friends. Here’s to another fun summer of camping for our area Girl Scouts.
