MASON CITY — Mason City has been named a 2026 All-Star Community for transforming an overgrown and underused stretch of Willow Creek into a downtown destination blending nature, recreation, art and architecture.
The Iowa League of Cities selected Mason City for its River City Riverwalk and Waterfront District. Mason City was one of only three winners chosen from among Iowa’s 940 cities, joining West Branch and Story City.
City representatives will receive the award during a banquet at the Iowa League of Cities Annual Conference and Exhibit, scheduled for September 23-25 in Bettendorf.
The All-Star Community Award is the most prestigious honor the League presents to Iowa cities. A panel of former city officials and others familiar with municipal government judges entries based on innovation in urban renewal, development, preservation, collaboration and quality-of-life improvements.
The River City Riverwalk and Bill Schickel Plaza opened in June 2025, converting a dormant area near Southbridge Mall into a place where residents and visitors can walk, gather and explore Mason City’s cultural and architectural heritage.
The project includes accessible trails, native landscaping, public art and educational features inspired by Mason City’s Prairie School architectural legacy.
Its centerpiece is Harmony in Light, a laser-cut stainless steel sculpture created by internationally recognized artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelen Filipchuk of HYBYCOZO Studios.
The plaza honors former Mayor Bill Schickel for his decades of public service and commitment to Mason City.
The award represents another milestone for a project that developed over several years. In 2021, NorthIowaToday.com reported that Mason City received a $150,000 grant for Riverwalk improvements, including a gathering area, new pathways, public art and trail upgrades.
City officials formally designated the Willow Creek Riverwalk and Bill Schickel Plaza as an official city park in November 2025. That action placed the area under the oversight of the Mason City Park and Recreation Board and established responsibility for its long-term care.
The Riverwalk is strategically positioned within Mason City’s Downtown Cultural and Entertainment District, linking housing, entertainment venues, parks and other recreational amenities.
It is also a key part of the larger River City Renaissance project. An 88-room Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel planned for the Riverwalk District was designed to connect with Music Man Square through Mason City’s downtown skywalk.
The Riverwalk also complements the expanding Prairie Rock Trails System. That network includes the Riverwalk, the High Line Trail, approximately 20 miles of existing trails and a major bicycle park intended to strengthen Northern Iowa’s reputation as an outdoor recreation destination.
According to the Iowa League of Cities, the Riverwalk has quickly become a signature destination and a symbol of Mason City’s continued investment in a vibrant and livable downtown.
