AMES – Icy Iowa roads helped claim another life Saturday, this time in Story county.
At about 9:40 AM Saturday, a southbound vehicle on Interstate 35 at the 118 mile marker driven by 53-year-old Gregory Schaa of Steamboat Rock, Iowa lost control due to icy roads and crossed the median. The vehicle spun around and then proceeded to slide southbound at about 45 miles per hour in the northbound lanes, rear-ending a second vehicle driven by Wayne Hurtig of Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Schaa was ejected from the vehicle and injured. He was taken to an Ames hospital.
Stuart Leslee Pettigrew, age 52 of Eldora, was killed.
Also Saturday, 3 Iowans were injured in a head-on collision in Tama county which occurred t about 11 AM. Mistrey Ficken, age 27; Dana Sue Willis, age 40; and Ila Jeanne Willis, age 61 were all taken to a Marshalltown hospital after the accident with undisclosed injuries.
