ALGONA — Harlan E. Wittkopf, 79, of Algona, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 25, 2026.
Born May 28, 1947, Harlan lived a life marked by family, professional service, curiosity and wide-ranging interests. He was well known in the Algona area through his work as an attorney and small claims court judge, roles that connected him to many people across Kossuth County and North Iowa.
Harlan’s life also reached far beyond the courtroom. He developed a deep passion for collecting seashells, a hobby that grew over decades and became one of the more distinctive parts of his story. His interest in shells, especially those connected to Sanibel Island, Florida, reflected his patience, eye for detail and love of discovery.
Friends, family and those who knew him will remember Harlan for the many layers of his life — his dedication to his profession, his commitment to family, his curiosity about the world and the joy he found in collecting, learning and sharing his interests with others.
His passing marks the loss of a longtime Algona figure whose life touched the community through law, public service, family ties and personal passions that made him memorable.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 2, 2026, at New Hope Church in Algona.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM until the time of the service Thursday at New Hope Church.
Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Algona.
