DES MOINES – State Representative Sharon Steckman of Mason City was recognized for her legislative work with the Achieving Maximum Potential (AMP) program at the Statehouse last week.
She received the award for her outstanding efforts and advocacy for the campaign to raise awareness of the problem of human trafficking and to stop sexual exploitation of Iowa’s foster care and runaway youth. Her proposed legislation will work to provide additional protections and resources for victims of human trafficking.
“There is more we can do to stop human trafficking and break the cycle of exploitation of our young people,” said Steckman. “This is just the beginning, and I plan to keep working to protect these kids.”
AMP is a program of the Partnership of the Iowa Foster Care Youth Council that works with youth, particularly foster and adoptive children in Iowa. The program offers leadership opportunities, service learning projects, speaking opportunities, educational/vocational assistance and provides young people with the life skills to become self-sufficient, independent adults.
Nice job, Representative Steckman. Your award is well deserved.
