WASHINGTON — Under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA, federal authorities have indefinitely suspended former Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and several associates following a major federal indictment. The suspension comes as part of a broad investigation into the alleged misappropriation of approximately $5.7 million in disaster relief funds intended for pandemic response.
The DHS Office of the General Counsel and the FEMA Office of Chief Counsel announced the action against the former Democrat congresswoman (pictured at top), her brother Edwin Cherfilus, and multiple affiliated entities. The indictment alleges that the group funneled millions of dollars from the FEMA Public Assistance program—originally allocated to support state-led COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Florida—toward personal enrichment and illegal campaign contributions.
According to DHS General Counsel James Percival, the “Florida woman” and her associates abused the public’s trust during a national crisis to divert funds meant for emergency relief. Investigative findings from a federal grand jury and the U.S. House of Representatives indicate that the scheme relied on sophisticated evasion tactics to move taxpayer money into private accounts. The misuse of funds was reportedly discovered through a collaborative effort involving state-level reconciliation, FEMA’s internal closeout processes, and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Unit.
The enforcement action aligns with the administration’s broader initiative to restore integrity to federal benefit programs. The Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, led by Vice President JD Vance, has directed agencies to aggressively combat waste and abuse within safety-net programs to ensure that benefits reach only eligible Americans. Federal officials noted that FEMA’s Office of the Chief Security Officer worked closely with the DOJ to trace the flow of the diverted funds and support the ongoing criminal case.
As the investigation continues, authorities are encouraging members of the public who suspect disaster fraud related to FEMA programs to come forward and report suspicious activity. The legal proceedings remain active, and the suspensions of the involved parties and entities will remain in effect indefinitely as the federal government moves to protect taxpayer assets from further misuse.
