ROCKWELL — Police in this small Northern Iowa town are reminding drivers to slow down after a young motorist was nabbed traveling 70 mph in a 45 mph zone on Madison Street.
According to a Rockwell police social media post, the traffic stop happened June 24, 2026, after the driver was clocked at 70 mph in an area where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.
Police said the driver was going 25 mph over the speed limit and would soon have entered a 25 mph zone if the vehicle had not been stopped near the area beginning south of 5th Street.
The driver was cited, with police saying the ticket will cost $239.
The enforcement comes after the Rockwell City Council changed the speed zone on Madison Street from 5th Street south to Quince Avenue to 45 mph. Police said Madison Street is a busy route that sees heavy use in the community, especially with traffic being rerouted because of the Highway 65 detour.
The post served as both a warning and a reminder to motorists: even in small towns, detours and busy local streets do not mean drivers can treat city roads like highways.
Police urged drivers to pay attention to posted speed limits, especially in areas where traffic patterns have changed.
