WASHINGTON – The U.S. strongly condemned terrorist attacks that took place in Egypt on Friday, January 24, 2014.
“These crimes should be investigated fully and the perpetrators should be brought to justice. We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and we hope for the quick and full recovery of the survivors,” a State Department spokesperson said.
According to the BBC, militants stepped up their campaign against security forces in Egypt with a series of explosions in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Six people were killed and some 100 others wounded, with the biggest blast outside Cairo’s police headquarters.
“We urge all Egyptians to exercise calm and restraint ahead of the third anniversary of Egypt’s revolution,” said State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf. “The Egyptian Government and people are navigating their political transition in a challenging security environment and violence aimed at undermining this transition has no place in Egypt.
“We continue to support the people of Egypt and urge them to move forward peacefully with the transition, respecting the rights of all Egyptians.”
