MASON CITY – A garage fire this morning in Mason City totaled up to $18,000 in damages, authorities say.
On March 7th, at 6:23 a.m. the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched for the report of smoke coming from a garage at 18 1⁄2 13th Street NE (pictured at top today). A Mason City Police Department Officer noticed the smoke coming from the building during patrol. When the Mason City Fire Department arrived on scene, smoke was showing from the eaves of the structure. Firefighters gained access to the building and quickly extinguished the fire while searching for possible victims. No occupants were found inside this structure, and no injuries were reported.
The fire was contained to the parts/tool room with extension into the attic space above the room. There was smoke damage throughout the building.
The fire appears to be accidental and caused by a space heater.
The property owner is June Newman of Mason City. Estimated loss to property and contents is $18,000.
The Mason City Fire Departments was assisted by Mason City Police Department, Clear Lake Fire Department Ambulance, and Alliant Energy.
All Mason City Fire Department apparatus cleared the scene at 8:14 AM.
