Harley P. Sturges

Harley P. Sturges, 82, of Rockwell, died September 11, 2012 at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday September 15, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell. Father Rodney Allers will officiate. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell immediately following the service on Saturday. Full military honors will be provided by the Rockwell American Legion. Visitation will be held on Friday September 14, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church School from 4 – 7 p.m. and an hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Scripture Prayer will be at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be made out to the Harley Sturges Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.fullertonfh.com.

Harley was born March 17, 1930 in rural Rockwell to Frank and Mary (Scholl) Sturges. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Rockwell High School in 1948. In September of 1950 he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War serving our country until being honorably discharged in July 1954. In February 1958, he married Patricia Radcliff. This marriage brought forth two sons, Brian and David. He remarried in September of 1979 to Shirley Jeffrey.

During the years on the farm he was a dedicated farmer always checking and watching his crops. After retiring from full-time farming he enjoyed going to the casino’s where he enjoyed playing Black Jack and talking with people. He was also active with the VFW and Legion Post 208 serving as their commander in 1957.

Harley is survived by his wife Shirley, son Brian Sturges of Rockwell, siblings: Marcille ‘Sal” Palmer of Dubuque, IA, Clyde (Margaret) Sturges of Carmel, CA, and Paul (Tina) Sturges of Waverly, IA; grandchildren: Amanda, Joe and Ryan Sturges all of Rockwell; and great grandchildren Justice Cassady, Davidson, Dylan and Lane Sturges all of Rockwell.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents, son David Sturges, brother John Sturges and brother-in-law Merlin ‘Chick’ Palmer.
