Mail delivery in Mason City, Iowa

MASON CITY – A postal mail delivery truck exploded in a Mason City neighborhood, authorities say.

On July 14, at approximately 3:49 PM, the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a truck that exploded at 126 Winnebago Way. Fire crews arrived and found a US Postal Service delivery truck on fire. The fire was mainly in the engine compartment with no evidence of a major explosion happening.
No injuries were reported.

Emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 4:37 p.m. The cause of the fire was accidental due to mechanical failure.

Fire crews were assisted by Mason City Police Department and the US Postal Service.

Back in December, the United States Postal Service announced that it expects to acquire at least 66,000 battery electric delivery vehicles as part of its 106,000 vehicle acquisition plan for deliveries between now and 2028. The vehicles purchased as part of this anticipated plan will begin to replace the Postal Service’s aging delivery fleet of over 220,000 vehicles.
