Energy Assistance funds available to North Iowa families

MASON CITY – North Iowa Community Action Org. has announced that applications are now being accepted for the 2012-2013 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program is funded through the Iowa Department of Human Rights, and has been established to help qualifying low-Income homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs.

With winter upon us, and anticipation of continued high winter heating costs, we are encouraging households to look at the guidelines and determine if they might be eligible for the program. If approved for Energy Assistance, a one-time payment will be made to your heat supplier. Note: Consumers may notice an increase from last year’s initial award amount.

The applicant will need to furnish a copy of their social security card, a copy of a recent heating bill, an electric bill, and proof of all household members’ gross income for the past three months, for the past calendar year or their most recent Federal income tax return. Applicants may call for a mailable application.

Assistance is based upon household income, household size, type of fuel, type of housing, and other factors. The last day to apply for the program is April 30, 2013. Eligibility for participation is established according to the following Federal Income Guidelines:

This program is not designed to pay a household’s total energy costs. The program will provide supplemental assistance for eligible households.

Households who are over LIHEAP regular income guidelines may be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through our medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be paid, documented, and non-reimbursable. For more information regarding this, please contact your local County Community Action office.
