WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) on Friday announced that two regional planning commissions will receive a total of $109,800 to update their comprehensive economic development strategies. These funds were made through the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) Economic Development Administration. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee that funds the DOC.

“Formulating sound development strategies is key to increasing Iowans’ career opportunities and growing urban and rural economies,” said Harkin. “I congratulate these communities on receiving these funds as Iowa continues to invest in sound, stable projects that develop new jobs and career opportunities across the state.”

The EDA seeks to diversify and strengthen the regional economy by supporting the development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy.

Details of the funding are below:

Northland Regional Economic Development Commission: $54, 900 to serve Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, and Grundy counties.
Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission: $54,900 to serve Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, O’Brien, Osceola, Lyon, Palo Alto, and Sioux counties.
