MASON CITY – A caller reported Saturday afternoon that they had witnessed what appeared to be animal cruelty.
According to a report brought to NIT, a person witnessed individuals in a greenish-gray older model SUV throw at least two kittens out of their vehicle. The caller indicated that kittens were thrown out of both the passenger side window and the driver’s side window. The caller also indicated that the incident took place between McDonald’s restaurant and Perkins on Highway 122 on Mason City’s west side between 11:30 AM and noon.
“One of the kittens was an orange tabby kitten,” the caller said. She indicated that her grandmother saw the kittens thrown from the SUV and had tried to go back and check on them. She also said that police were called and that the orange kitten was likely run over due to the high traffic at the time.
A call to the Mason City Humane Society at 12:45 PM confirmed that they knew about the incident and were going to the scene this afternoon. Staff there said police were already notified and were going to the scene as well more immediately.
NIT is checking with police at this time to see if they have received more calls about the incident or a better description of the vehicle, which was headed east on Highway 122.
NIT checked back with the caller this afternoon at 1:20 PM and the source indicated that both kitten were found near the Clarion Inn and were hurt but alive.
