MASON CITY – To kick off the New Year, the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health encourages residents to stick to their New Year’s resolution of quitting smoking by taking action. Tobacco Free North Iowa will host Freedom from Smoking clinics beginning Tuesday, January 12, 2016. The clinics are FREE to individuals. Worksite programs are also available.
The program teaches smokers to overcome their nicotine addiction so they can enjoy the benefits of better health, extra money, and healthier relationships. Participants will learn about medicines that can help them stop smoking, lifestyle changes that make quitting easier, preparing for their “Quit Day”, strategies to manage their stress in a different manner, avoiding weight gain that can coincide with quitting, developing a new self-image, and how to stay smoke-free for good.
“Quitting smoking is the single most important step a person can take to improve the length and quality of his or her life,” said Penny McCaslin, Tobacco Program Coordinator, Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “It will also improve the health of everyone around them, as secondhand smoke is harmful to everyone who inhales it.”
You’re probably thinking ‘New Year’s resolutions never work’. However, it has been shown that people who use this program are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who quit on their own. Up to 60% of participants report having quit by the end of the program when used in combination with smoking cessation medications.
