UPDATED: Bicyclist run over and hospitalized by auto driver this morning in Mason City

MASON CITY – A bicyclist was run over and hospitalized by an auto driver this morning in Mason City.

Mason City police tell NIT that at approximately 3:02 AM on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, the Mason City Police Department responded to a personal injury collision in the 3800 block of South Federal Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found that a northbound bicyclist had been struck by a northbound vehicle in the northbound lanes.

The bicyclist was injured and was transported to MercyOne North Iowa by the Mason City Fire Department. At this time, the condition of the bicyclist is unknown. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

Mason City police didn’t immediately respond to questions from NIT this morning.

The Iowa State Patrol was called in to assist with the investigation of the collision and it remains under investigation.

Later Tuesday, the Iowa State Patrol identified the injured bike rider as 62-year-old William Russeff, Jr. The driver was identified as 32-year-old Kevin Harris of Rockford, who was driving a 2018 Dodge Caravan. The patrol said in its report that “the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and did not have the proper reflective equipment.”
