SAN DIEGO — A federal judge Wednesday awarded $17.8 million to the survivors of four family members killed when a Marine Corps jet crashed into their San Diego home in 2008.
U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Miller made the award based on three days of testimony from members of the Yoon family and evidence submitted by lawyers for the federal government.
The Marine Corps admitted responsibility for the Dec. 8, 2008, crash of an F/A-18D that destroyed the Yoon home.
The wife, mother-in-law and two daughters of Don Yoon were killed instantly. Yoon was at work when the crash occurred.
The Marine Corps blamed the crash on mechanical failure and errors by the pilot and the ground personnel. The pilot ejected safely and has since been put back on flying status.
