MASON CITY – It was a quick, smooth Sunday night at the races. Very few accidents or cautions, so the night was an early one.
Levi Nielson took home the his first, First Place Feature trophy of the 2012 season in the Modified Class Sunday night, with JJ Wise coming in second, followed by Rob Rose. It’s been awhile since we have heard these names placing at the I-35 Speedway at the North Iowa Events Center in Mason City.
The Stock Car Feature had Travis Shipman coming in first place followed by Travis Prochaska and Kevin Opheim. Larry Portis, the point leader, came in fifth. Joe Willier who finished sixth and spun out while in the lead in an early heat race said, “I spun out, I just haven’t had much luck with this car. I can’t figure it out, but I will.” Willier had changed cars last season about the fifth race into the season.
The Sports Mod saw Nick West take First place followed by Travis Greenfield. Nick West, #2, hasn’t been a name many have seen lately, but Sunday night his car was on fire. Greenfield, #4, was trying to put out that fire, he put up a good fight, coming in second, his best finish this year.
Greenfield will be driving a new car next week, “He’ll have his new car on Wednesday. It’ll be a new car with a different look,” said Greenfield Racing Team.
Stac Schroeder, #51, took home the First Place trophy for the second week in a row in the Hobby Stock class. Heath Tulp and Chad Gentz were second and third.
For the Hornets and Jr. Hornets it was Ryan Bryant and Oliver Monson who took First Place.
