Dumpsters ablaze on city’s north end Tuesday morning

MASON CITY – Two separate reports of dumpsters on fire on Mason City’s north end Tuesday morning are being investigated as possible arson.

At 5:26 AM, the Mason City Police Department investigated a dumpster on fire at 1341 North Federal Avenue, home of the Alley Katz Bar.  Four police officers responded to check on that situation.

At 5:28 AM, the Mason City Police Department investigated another dumpster on fire at 1451 North Federal Avenue.  Building owner Tim Latham, who is selling the building on contract to persons who will be opening a restaurant at the location, had no comment other than to say he was surprised to hear that there were two simultaneous fires possibly set so early in the morning in the area.

Mason City Chief of Police Michael Lashbrook couldn’t comment on the fires Wednesday morning.  Police officers that morning were investigating the surrounding area looking for evidence.  On foot and circling the block, they were looking for suspects that may have started the fires.

A Mason City Fire Department spokesperson confirmed that the fires were being investigated as being intentionally set.  According to the fire report, “Department responded to a reported dumpster fire in the alley at 1341 N. Federal without delay.  Enroute dispatch alarmed for a second dumpster on fire one block north. 2315 arrived on scene to find a dumpster 3/4 involved.  Fire was extinguished, talked with PD they might have some evidence.”
