MITCHELL COUNTY — Two people were taken to the hospital after a crash Wednesday afternoon at Highway 218 and 480th Street in Mitchell County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 1:30 p.m. on May 14, 2026.
Investigators said a 2026 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Ian J. Bootsmiller, 27, of Cedar Rapids, was traveling eastbound on 480th Street when it failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 218.
The pickup was then struck broadside by a 2022 Volvo driven by Michael A. Swarts, 64, of Cedar Falls, according to the crash report.
After the collision, the Dodge entered the east ditch and sheared off a power pole. Highway 218 was closed because power lines were crossing the roadway.
Bootsmiller and Swarts were both injured and transported by Mitchell County EMS to Mitchell County Hospital. The Iowa State Patrol described the injuries as minor.
Both vehicles were towed by Dick’s Towing.
The crash was investigated by Lt. D.L. Knutson of the Iowa State Patrol. Mitchell County EMS and other Mitchell County responders assisted at the scene.
