Janice M. “Jan” Hinders was born June 27, 1942, to Clarence and Lena (Ahrens) Hinders, growing up on the family farm near Rudd. She attended school in Floyd until her junior year, when the school joined with Charles City, where she graduated. After high school, Jan set out for Seattle with a girl friend and spent a brief time there working at a grocery store before returning home to Iowa.
On August 19, 1967, she married Larry J. Grummer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa. They moved to Clear Lake and soon settled near Ventura where they raised their two children, Ronda and Scott. As the kids grew older, Jan returned to work, first at Dewey Electric and later at Clear Lake Telephone Company, where she remained until her retirement in the early 2000s.
Jan was a talented quilter with an eye for color and a drive for perfection. Her passion for quilting wasn’t just a hobby. It was a mission. She had plans for over 50 quilts, each thoughtfully designed for someone she cherished. Her quilting group in Garner was a source of joy, creativity, and friendship. She also loved to crochet, knit, and craft, and had a gift for making things both beautiful and meaningful.
She was strong-willed and didn’t sugarcoat things, and you always knew where you stood with her. Jan was known for being straightforward, sometimes feisty, and just a little bit stubborn. But those traits came from a place of deep care and unwavering love for her family. Her honesty, loyalty, and sense of humor made her one of a kind.
Over the years, she taught Sunday School at church, cheered loudly at Ventura High School and other local games, and proudly rooted for her grandsons at their football and baseball games. Jan never missed an opportunity to support her loved ones or to show her competitive spirit.
Jan leaves behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and candor. A life sewn together with color, honesty, and devotion.
Surviving are her daughter, Ronda (Steve) Prescott of Fertile, son, Scott (Lisa) Grummer of Forest City; grandsons, Tyler (Mattie) Prescott with baby Prescott on the way, and Logan Prescott; sisters-in-law, Gloria Hinders, Karen Buelow, Kay (Gary) Sheppard and Joyce Grummer; brother-in-law, Bill Carter; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family members.
