EMMET COUNTY – A traffic accident between a semi tractor trailer and a school bus recently led to two children being treated at an Estherville Hospital, authorities say.
According to Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens, on May 2nd at 4:21 PM, the Emmet County Communications Center received a call reporting a semi tractor trailer and school bus had collided at the intersection of 240th Street and 490th Avenue in Emmet County. Sheriff’s office officials arrived on the scene at 4:26 PM as well as the Wallingford Ambulance Service.
Upon investigation at the scene, it was determined that a 2022 Blue bird school bus owned by the North Union School District driven by Travis Schueller age 43 of Armstrong, had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection on 240th Street and 490th Avenue and then left the intersection westbound into the path of a southbound 2019 International semi tractor trailer combination owned by Long and Sons Trucking LLC and driven by Billy Long, ag 50 of Ruthven.
The school bus was struck by the semi tractor trailer combination near the center of the bus on the passenger side. The school bus then overturned coming to rest on its driver’s side.
Two children in the school bus ages 4 and 5 were transported to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville by the Wallingford Ambulance Service for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.
As a result of the investigation, the driver of the school bus was cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Estherville Police Department, Estherville Ambulance Service and Emmet County Emergency Management.
