Clarksville man gets probation for setting fire in city hall

CLARKSVILLE, IOWA – A Clarksville man who set a fire in city hall that caused significant damage got suspended prison terms and probation for his deeds.

A fire was reported Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Clarksville city hall, 115 West Superior Street. The blaze caused significant damage to the building. Emergency responders and law enforcement were called, and 23-year-old Nicolas James Wessels of Clarksville was arrested by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on charges of felony second-degree arson and felony second-degree criminal mischief.

In a plea deal to guilty of second-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief, Wessels – who reportedly was delinquent in taking his schizophrenia medications, leading to the outburst – was sentenced to up to 5 years of probation, suspended prison sentences of 10 and 5 years, and suspended fines. He must pay $456.78 in court fees and costs. He might be forced to pay restitution in the future, and a no-contact order on Wessels appears to be in effect, keeping him away from City Hall.
