CHARLES CITY — A Northern Iowa driver fled the scene after a two-vehicle crash in Charles City that caused an estimated $13,000 in damage, police said.

The Charles City Police Department said officers responded at 8:06 PM on June 20, 2026, to the intersection of 1st Avenue and Clark Street for a two-vehicle accident.

According to police, a black 2013 Dodge Dart driven by 23-year-old Leonel Perez-Varona of Waverly was struck by a silver 2007 Honda Civic driven by 16-year-old Emma Read.

Police said Read was cited for stopping at an unsafe distance.

Authorities said Perez-Varona, the driver of the Dodge Dart, fled the scene after the crash. He was later stopped and cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability and a registration violation.

The driver of the Honda Civic was evaluated by AMR at the scene but declined transport to Floyd County Medical Center, according to police.

Total damage from the crash was estimated at $13,000.

The crash remains another reminder of the risks drivers face when traffic mistakes are followed by poor decisions after a collision. Iowa law requires drivers involved in crashes to stop, provide information and render aid when necessary.

Citations are accusations, and the drivers are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Well starting tomorrow our roads will be more safe thanks to Reynolds raising the speed limit right ?

Won’t affect speed limits in towns.
