Police: Escaped Iowa mental patient  scales building and jumps from three stories, is seriously injured

AMES – An escaped Iowa mental patient scaled a building and jumped from three stories, landing n railroad tracks and was seriously injured.

On January 25, 2020, at 4:20 p.m., the Ames Police Department received a report that a male mental health patient walked away from Mary Greeley Medical Center at 1111 Duff Avenue. Responding officers located the male near Duff Avenue and Main Street. The male ran eastbound onto the railroad tracks, climbed a fence and entered a secured area at the Ames Power Plant at 200 E. 5th Street. The male scaled the building by climbing ductwork and external stairs. The male jumped from the third story of the Power Plant and landed on the railroad tracks. The male suffered serious injuries. The male was treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center and then transported to a hospital in Des Moines. The male’s name is not being released pending notification of family members.

Investigation into this incident continues by the Ames Police Department.
