EMMET COUNTY, IOWA – Police chased a young Kansas City man in a stolen car into Emmet county, and the man was found dead with a gun nearby, leading to an investigation.

On January 25, 2017, a Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputy observed a subject, later identified as Alexander Lee Graves, age 19 of Kansas City, Missouri, driving a vehicle that had been previously reported as stolen out of Sac County, Iowa. The deputy attempted to initiate a stop, but Graves fled in the vehicle.

The pursuit led into rural Emmet County at high speeds, where the deputy lost sight of the vehicle due to poor road conditions. Graves drove off the road into a ditch and fled into a field.

Upon finding the abandoned vehicle, the deputy followed Graves’ tracks into the field where he found Graves, deceased, with a handgun beside him.

The body was transported to Ankeny, IA where an autopsy was performed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner. At this time, the manner of death is believed to be suicide.

The investigation is ongoing by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
