CEDAR RAPIDS – After nearly 18 months on the run, a 56-year-old suspect is behind bars for an alleged broad-daylight murder in Chicago after a chance encounter with police in Iowa.
Christopher Maxwell was charged this week with one felony count of First Degree Murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man in August 2024.
The breakthrough in the case came on the afternoon of February 9, 2026. Police in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, responded to a report of a disturbance in the 0-100 block of the Third Avenue Bridge. When officers arrived and questioned Maxwell, he initially attempted to evade capture by providing a fictitious name.
