Bus driver given citation after traffic accident this week

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – The driver of a school bus that was involved in an auto accident earlier this week in which two people were hurt and a dozen kids checked by paramedics has been given a citation.

On January 24, 2017, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a traffic accident involving a 2012 Ford F-150 pickup and a West Fork Community Dsitrict School bus. The collision occurred at the intersection of Quail Avenue and 210th Street south of Mason City, Iowa.

At approximately 2:35 PM, a school bus driven by a 55-year-old Kimberlee Sue Kephart of Swaledale collided with a truck driven by 51-year-old Terry Michael Swant of Rockford. A female passenger in Mr. Swant’s vehicle, 33-year-old Ana Elizabeth Baquedano-Avila, also of Rockford, was transported by Mason City Paramedics to Mercy Hospital. The driver of the bus, Mrs.Kephart was also taken to the hospital. Twelve juveniles riding the bus at the time of the accident were seen by paramedics at the scene and released to parents without any reported injuries. The Iowa State Patrol, the Mason City Fire Department, and the Rockwell EMT assisted the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department at the scene of the collision.

As a result of an investigation by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department, the bus driver, Kimberlee Sue Kephart, was cited for failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign.
