MASON CITY – A gas leak in Mason City is still being worked on, and up to 300 people are still without gas service.

At about 7:00 AM, a nearby resident who was observing the area of Pierce Avenue and 1st Street SW said that “there were ten trucks, men going inside the [Greek] church. The church parking lot is full of Alliant Energy” personnel and trucks … from different areas of Iowa. Not just mason city. Mason city alliant does not have this many trucks in their energy fleet to serve customers.”

An Alliant Energy spokesperson said Monday at about 1:30 PM that “We have a little over half of our customers with natural gas, the other half we aren’t able to get in their home to relight the pilot. We hope to make contact with them when people come home from work.”

The spokesperson clarified, saying about 300 customers remain without gas service this afternoon.

Repairs were made to the gas line yesterday and there is no longer a safety issue, according to Alliant.

Alliant also warned that “There have been scams recently in our service territory where people pretending to be Alliant Energy personnel ask for payment saying a customer is late on their bill (even though they aren’t) and if the customer doesn’t pay their service will be shut off. We’d like to stress that this is a free service (relighting the pilot) and no one from our team would ask for payment.”
