DES MOINES – During the Thanksgiving holiday, many families will be traveling throughout the state. The Iowa State Patrol is reminding all motorists traveling over the holiday weekend that increased traffic on Iowa’s roadways can lead to more collisions and traffic delays.
Last year, during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, two individuals lost their lives on Iowa roadways. That is why the Iowa State Patrol is reminding all drivers and passengers to drive defensively and simply buckle up! Officials say wearing your seatbelt can increase your chance of survival in a crash by 50 percent.
The Iowa State Patrol encourages all Iowans to remember as they travel this weekend to not only buckle up, but also obey the speed limit, avoid distractions, and to get a designated driver if you are impaired. If all motorists abide by these rules, we can avoid fatal crashes on our roadways this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
State Troopers remind travelers with the cold winter weather upon us, to make sure you have adequate levels of fluids for your vehicle, and at least half a tank of gas. Be sure to check your car battery often and check your tire pressure on a regular basis. In case you get stranded, be sure to pack extra blankets and warm clothing, ice scrapers, a shovel, jumper cables, flashlights and a phone charger.
