CHARLES CITY – A sign at a Charles City convenience store is raising eyebrows Saturday.
A North Iowa resident shared a photo with the NIT newsroom of the sign at the Rush Stop convenience store, located at 609 South Main Street in Charles City. The sign says “Can’t we all just get abong?”
Some are saying that the sign is an obvious reference to a marijuana smoking instrument, sometimes referred to as a “bong”. Some people think the sign is funny while others are not so sure.
“That did say get along….at least when I left work last night around 1 (AM)”, one local resident said, inferring that the sign had been changed in recent hours.
Another woman said “WOW! And I’m criticized for moving my children away [from] Charles City!” while yet another Charles City woman said “They should keep them clean”, referring to signs around town.
“And we wonder why we have drug problems in our schools,” a Rockford woman said.
A Mason City man said, “I think it’s hilarious. They always have funny stuff on their sign when I drive through there. It’s a nice little store.”
A call to the store was answered by an employee, who said they hadn’t had any feedback on the sign and was somewhat surprised that people are talking about it.
“We like to have a little humor on the sign,” the employee told NIT. “Did you see the other side? It’s about Obama who said ‘I’ve been to all 57 states and I still have one more to go.'”
What is your opinion? Is the sign in bad taste?
Bad taste? No not at all. lot of truth about the marijuana plant and its effects have been in discussion lately. With some states allowing recreational use. You can’t help but think of what’s really going on when tobacco alone kills at staggering rates, and the problems alcohal causes?? Those numbers leave a bad taste in my mouth. Not some sign.
@Doug-so, what you are saying is that you are willing to change two poisons for a new one.
Just because in your experience, someone you know, or perhaps you yourself, use marijuana or alcohol irresponsibly doesn’t mean it’s poison for others.
I understand you are a big government fan, an authoritarian if you will, but you should at least be up front about your government love-fetish rather than the loony tune that marijuana is poison.
It is funny, everyone needs to learn to laugh.
The sign did say “can’t we all just get along” if someone changed it its not the stores fault and they need to find the person who changed it to that and not blame the store until they have their facts straight!

I wonder how many people/hours will be put in to raise a fuss about this. It would be a shame to focus on something like the kid that left school with a gun a couple days ago in Charles City.

Marijuana cookies, gummies , and pop, but you put a camel on a pack of cigs and you are targeting kids … The idiocy and hypocrisy is overwhelming. Most Americans seem to be idiots !!
Before you even walk into a marijuana store in Colorado, you are ID’d and wait around in a waiting area until an employee walks you into the actual store.
Most of the edibles are sold on the medical side for those with a physician’s prescription as absorption is slower and more constant. None of it is marketed for kids for whom possession and distribution is just as illegal as it was 5 years ago for everyone.
Who really cares?…its just a sign.
Well, there was that one lady who moved out of Charles City. Wherever she lives, she still seems to care.
