MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors met for their regular meeting Tuesday morning.

The board approved the purchase of a small piece of land from Donald and Mildred Baker near a curve on Highway B-20 northwest of Mason City to allow for a straightening of the roadway there. The county agreed to buy .256 acres from the Bakers for $3,892.  County Engineer Mary Kelly indicated that the Bakers agreed to the sale price without negotiating.  “They are very friendly,” Kelly said.

The county was awarded $400,000 toward the B20 straightening project.  The County Engineer’s Office has confirmed that the work will be done on B-20 from Eagle Avenue east 2 miles to Grouse Avenue and then south for 1 mile.

The board approved plans for a new bridge on Spruce Avenue north of 330th Street, near Plymouth.  The cost of the project would be about $320,000 for the proposed 110 feet long by 24 feet wide, continuous concrete slab bridge.  Kelly indicated she wants to get he plans into the Iowa DOT as soon as possible in order to secure funding ahead of an April 16th bid letting.

A bridge formerly located on Mallard Avenue was not sold after a county attorney and Kelly recommended it not be sold, with liability concerns as main issue.  The board decided to go in the direction of scrapping the bridge for any potential revenue it might bring instead of a sale.

In other business, the board authorized Mary Beth Nelson, Director of Cerro Gordo County Case Management, to hire two additional Case Managers. Targeted Case Management involves assistance in gaining access to appropriate needed medical services and interrelated social and educational services.  The rate of pay for the case managers is a salary of $34,500.

The board also approved a tax compromise with Jeff and Jessica Tierney on a property purchase located on South Federal Avenue, near the Rose Bowl, formerly known as Rayburn Mobile Home Park.  Mr. Tierney indicated that he intends to improve the property there, clearing debris and some small trees and improving an existing building there.  “When you’re coming into Mason City… it won’t look like such a dump,” he said.

The property is technically not inside the city limits of Mason City.
